DSA is funding that helps cover extra study support if you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition, neurodivergence or specific learning difference. It can fund things like:

  • Specialist one-to-one study support

  • Assistive technology and software

  • Study skills support

If you're eligible for extra funding, it’s best to apply as early as possible before you start university. The process can take time, so applying early helps make sure support is ready when your course begins

How to apply for DSA

The process usually includes four steps:

1. Apply for DSA

Submit your application through your Student Finance account (or your funding body). You’ll also need to provide supporting evidence.

2. Needs assessment

You’ll have an informal assessment to discuss your study needs. This is not a test – it helps identify the support you need.

3. Recommendations report

An assessor will recommend support based on your needs and send this to your funding body.

4. Approval and support setup

Once approved, you’ll receive confirmation and can arrange your support directly with providers.

If you do not qualify for DSA

If you are an international student or your course is not eligible, you may still be able to access support. Contact the Disability Advice team to discuss your options and alternative support available.
