Tuition fees

Once you’ve completed online registration or re-registration, a tuition fee invoice will be created and you’ll receive an email letting you know that a new transaction has been added to your account.

You can view your account, check your balance and pay your invoice by logging in to Student View and going to the My Finance tab.

Please note that pre-payments, such as deposits, may not appear on your invoice, so remember to deduct these from the amount due before making a payment.

You can pay online using American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Visa Debit or PayPal. International bank transfers can also be made through Flywire.

If you’re paying on behalf of a student as a sponsor, you’ll need to use the Webpay portal once an invoice has been issued. Sign in using the account number shown in the top-left corner of the invoice.

Online payment becomes available 24 hours after the invoice is created. You can pay using American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Visa Debit or PayPal.

Web pay

You can arrange to pay your fees in instalments by entering your payment details during online registration. This is completed in the Financial Registration section and applies to all standard instalment options.

The exception is the International Student two-instalment plan, where both payments must be made directly to the University.

Once your instalment plan has been set up and your fee invoice has been issued, you’ll receive a payment schedule showing the amount and date of each instalment. Payments will then be collected automatically.

You can pay by Direct Debit, Mastercard, Visa, Visa Debit or American Express.

You can also view the relevant terms and conditions online.

International admission fees

For international applicants, a deposit is normally required before the University can issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

If your fees are being paid by an approved financial sponsor, you may instead provide a sponsorship letter. The sponsor cannot be a friend or family member, and the letter should be submitted at least three weeks before your course starts. It must be received before your CAS can be issued and should be emailed to [email protected].

All offers are also subject to the University’s standard checks, including criminal conviction declarations, fee status, requirements for students under 18, ATAS where applicable, document authenticity, and UKVI regulations.

After you complete online registration or re-registration, your tuition fee invoice will be created and you’ll receive an email confirming a new transaction on your account. You can then view your balance and make payment through Student View, using the payment links in the My Finance tab.

If you need a pro forma invoice before this stage, contact [email protected].

Please remember that advance payments, including deposits, may not appear on your invoice, so these should be deducted from the outstanding amount before you pay.

Payments can be made by American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Visa Debit or PayPal. International students can also pay through Flywire.

A tuition fee deposit is required, and £1,000 of this is non-refundable. Deposits are normally refunded in full if a student’s visa application is refused, unless the refusal is linked to a fraudulent application. Further information about refunds is available in the University’s Tuition Fee Policy.

Applicants should only pay the deposit after receiving an offer from the University.

Once all academic and financial conditions have been met and the deposit payment has cleared, the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) will be issued by email. Please note that a CAS cannot be issued more than three months before the course start date.

The deposit is deducted from the total tuition fee due.

Some students may not be required to pay a tuition fee deposit. More information is available on the International fees and funding page.

Scams and frauds

Students, particularly international students, can be targeted by fraudsters when making university payments. Scammers may offer discounts, favourable exchange rates or other incentives to persuade students to use unofficial payment methods. The University of Portsmouth does not offer incentives for paying through third parties, so if an offer seems unusually good, it should be treated with caution.

University fees should always be paid through approved University payment routes. Students should never share their University login details, banking information, card details or PIN with anyone offering to make payments on their behalf.

Common scams include:

  • Fee payment fraud – A third party may offer to pay your fees using stolen bank or card details. The payment can later be reversed, leaving your fees unpaid. Fraudsters may also provide altered receipts to make it appear that a full payment has been made when it has not.
  • Money mule scams – Students may be offered money in return for receiving funds into their bank account and then transferring or withdrawing them. This can involve criminal activity and may have serious consequences.

Fraudulent payments can result in significant financial loss and may also affect your student status. If the University identifies or suspects fraudulent activity, it may take action in line with its Anti-Money Laundering Policy. This could include rejecting an application, withdrawing a CAS or removing a student from their course.

How to protect yourself

Always use the University’s approved payment methods and be cautious of anyone offering discounts, unusually favourable exchange rates or easy money. Do not share your University login or financial details with third parties, and never feel pressured to transfer money to someone you do not know.

If you are unsure about a payment or think you may have been targeted by a scam, contact the University’s Income team at [email protected] or call +44 (0)23 9284 5533. You can also find further advice through the UK’s Report Fraud service.

Students are responsible for payments made on their account, including payments arranged through third parties. Wherever possible, payments should be made by the student or a trusted close family member using approved University channels.

Sanctions

If you’re making a payment from a country or region subject to financial sanctions, the University may need additional information to confirm where the funds are coming from.

This currently applies to payments from:

  • Syria
  • North Korea
  • Iran
  • Cuba
  • Russia
  • Crimea
